16 Friday
Film Night, Zen Buddhism, 7:30 PM
This beautifully photographed documentary takes us on a Korean Zen journey deep into a remote mountain temple for a 90 day Winter Retreat.  The ancient temple is austere, serene, and has the look of being timeless.  The two dozen nuns in Retreat follow a vigorous routine of meditation, fasting, and exercises.  Every action, every scene reflects tranquility.

Film Night, A Zen Life: D.T. Suzuki, 7:30 PM
Daisetsu Teitaro Suzuki's long and fruitful life (1870-1966) is explored through archival footage and interviews. Suzuki became the first voice of Japanese Buddhism, especially Zen, to the Western World.  His teachings were traditional, but radical, and they had an impact on religious, artistic, and philosophical thinking that continues to this day.  In 1957, The New Yorker wrote that "he radiates a special serenity that makes him a magnificent living example of the doctrine he preaches".
