Days In Residence

Although the Calendar abounds with opportunities for sitting and studying the Dharma together, there is yet another possibility for actualizing practice which has, up to now, been something of an “unadvertised special”: Days in Residence.  Designed for committed students who have been sitting for at least a year, this program offers practitioners a chance to live here for 2- 5 days, joining in the rhythm of everyday temple life: early morning zazen, breakfast, altar cleaning, grocery shopping and cooking, meals, exercise walk, Dharma study, training in zendo positions and instruments, and evening zazen. The student in residence will serve as Jisha, or Teacher attendant, throughout his/her stay.  Silence is kept from the end of evening zazen until the end of morning zazen. This is training by living our practice side-by-side - what Darlene Cohen often refers to as “body-to-body” practice.

Guest space in the loft has worked well for both male and female visitors. A minimum donation of $15 per day goes to EHZC, cost of food is shared 50/50.      Dates can be reserved on a first-come-first-serve basis via e-mail or telephone.
