Twice each year we schedule a Weekend Sesshin (or Intensive Retreat) at Garrison Institute on the Hudson. We ask that participants arrive on Friday morning at 9 am to sign in, and then assist with setting up our sitting space together. The opening Han should sound at 10:00 am.. We close after lunch on Sunday once everything is packed up and cleaned up and no trace remains, usually by 2 pm. We keep silent, except for meeting with teachers or work-leaders, both upstairs and downstairs. Thus we each support the structured “container”, based on ancient monastic forms, within which we can enter deeply into the silence and stillness of practice.
Please pack lightly, bringing plain dark sitting clothes as well as slip-on sandals or shoes for indoors. Only the meditation hall is entered without shoes; it is required that shoes be worn in all other places. Jewelry, make-up, perfumes or scented aftershave, are not appropriate. Please bring what you need to enjoy outdoor walking during the breaks, weather permitting. There are two hot tubs upstairs (male & female separate) in which is customary to wear a bathing suit.
Garrison Institute supplies sheets, blankets, towel (but not washcloth) for your use. Nutritious vegetarian meals are offered each day in the dining room. If you have special dietary restrictions, it might be useful to discuss this with them in person. It is possible to bring some prepared food along, keeping it in the refrigerator off the dining room and warming it in the adjacent microwave. No food is permitted upstairs in your room.
Please enjoy the descriptions of their facilities and programs on their website, and also make use of their driving directions, here.
* Payment over time or partial scholarships are available if arranged with the teachers in advance.
